When I started this year, I made myself a promise. I would slow down in all facets of my life: business, personal, and everything in between. It’s not uncommon that I make larger shifts in the winter. I view this time as a period of re-building and rebirth. An opportunity to look at what’s succeeded, failed, and challenging myself to be better than past iterations.

Since starting Black Phoenix Group in 2020, my view of the real estate industry and my personal success has shifted. The use of time weighs heavily on how I perceive the world. This was caused by shifts in my perspective, most of which were instigated by the loss of loved ones and the realization that life is fleeting, accelerating even more so as I progress in age.

I'm no longer concerned with success in the traditional sense. I don't strive to be the best or even care to look at my accomplishments in relation to others within my industry. It’s easy to be enticed by the hustle culture in this career, and if you allow it, this path will consume every waking moment of your life. I have seen what it can do to people, myself included, oftentimes pulling you to work longer, push harder, and sacrifice more until there is nothing left.

While success is relative, I've come to realize that my version revolves around being more methodical with my approach, perfecting my craft, and creating an environment for my clients that is meaningful and present. As I looked at my goals for 2025, I came to the conclusion that I needed to continue down this process of what may seem like deprivation; however, to me, it has become an exercise in cleansing, purifying, and restoring.

This year, I started at what I would consider the basics of my industry: the paper file. For those who have been around long enough, you'll remember these folders (as they used to be the norm), now replaced with their digital version. As I made the purchase and eventually filled them out, I chuckled to myself, remembering the vow I made to never use them again.

As this practice in patience progressed, I found that the experience of filling them out and completing these folders allowed me to feel more connected to my business. It had restored a sense of meaning that I believe is sometimes missed in the digital world. Each file represents a client, a process, and signifies the guidance within the process, in which I find so fulfilling. Each day I can see them, interact with them, and remind myself why I continue to dedicate my life to this career. In the end, it’s just a paper file, but it is a reminder of how I should be happy with the fact that I am slowing down, yet still very much fulfilled.
